Scotmas has recently established a team of employee volunteers who are passionate about creating a positive impact on the environment.
The team’s main objective is to achieve Net Zero by 2025 and obtain B Corp certification for the company.
They have been working tirelessly to develop and implement sustainable solutions to reduce the company’s carbon footprint, increase energy efficiency, and promote sustainable practices. We are excited to share the progress of our recycling project, which has been actively enhancing our sustainability efforts for the past four months.
Here’s a look at what we have achieved so far and what you can expect to see in the near future.
1. Comprehensive Training
Our training sessions have successfully included teams from the Production, Engineering, and Technical departments, along with several individual contributors. We’re scheduling one final session at the end of April to ensure everyone has the opportunity to participate.
2. Annual Refreshers
We will soon integrate recycling training resources on iHasco to keep our recycling knowledge up-to-date. This will allow all employees to refresh their knowledge annually, reinforcing our commitment to environmental stewardship.
3. Strategic Bin Placement
We have placed recycling bins at strategic locations throughout the office, including the kitchen. These bins are emptied regularly, and the waste is weighed to monitor our output. This data will help us compare and understand the percentage of total waste that we successfully recycle.
4. Exploring New Contractors
We are evaluating new waste contractors to improve waste management. We aim to partner with the most reliable and effective supplier who can provide detailed data on our waste production.
5. Expansion Plans
By the end of April this year, we plan to extend the recycling project to include the Engineering and Production departments, further broadening the impact of our efforts.
6. Composting Challenges
We are exploring composting solutions for managing food waste. While finding a viable option has been challenging, we encourage anyone interested in using food waste for their garden to take advantage of this resource.
7. Significant Reduction in Landfill Waste
Our preliminary analysis of kitchen waste data has revealed a remarkable achievement – we have nearly halved the waste volume we send to landfills!
Previously, 86% of our waste was in landfills, but with our concerted efforts, this figure has dropped to just 47%. This is not just a significant step towards our sustainability goals, but also a testament to your hard work and commitment. Your efforts have made a tangible difference, and we couldn’t be prouder!
Great Progress!
We are optimistic about the positive changes our recycling project is bringing to Scotmas and our environment. As we look ahead, we are excited about the upcoming plans and the potential for an even more significant impact.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to push forward in our sustainability journey. Together, we can make a significant impact!
