Veolia, a global leader in water technology, through its subsidiary SIDEM, is set to engineer and supply essential technology for the Hassyan seawater desalination plant in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
This initiative is backed by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and ACWA Power.
The Hassyan facility, set to be the second largest in the world utilising reverse osmosis (RO) technology and the largest solar-powered desalination plant, is a testament to Veolia’s commitment to sustainable and energy-efficient solutions, as outlined in its GreenUp strategic plan.
Bravo MX Technology
The plant will be approximately 55 kilometres southwest of Dubai Creek and aims to provide a safe and reliable source of drinking water to two million people. With a capacity to produce 818,000 cubic meters of water per day (180 million imperial gallons per day), the plant integrates Scotmas’ Bravo MX Chlorine Dioxide water disinfection technology, a crucial component designed to ensure the purity and safety of the drinking water. The facility is set to commence operations in 2026 and reach total capacity by 2027.
The Bravo MX, engineered to meet industry WIMES 1 8.02 specifications and produce Chlorine Dioxide that conforms to BS EN 12671, aligns with Article 10 of the EU Drinking Water Directive 98/83/EC for use in public water supplies. This system is our premier solution for large industrial and municipal water settings requiring continuous delivery of high purity Chlorine Dioxide.
Turn-key Solution
Featuring a pre-engineered skid mount design, the Bravo MX offers a turn-key solution that simplifies implementation for large-scale water utility and industrial clients. With a service life of 25 years, this system integrates our smaller generators’ robust safety and reliability standards. It is tailored to meet the stringent fail-safe and security requirements of water utilities and heavy industrial clients with MODBUS integration.
A key advantage of the Bravo MX is its multi-point dosing technology, which allows multiple parts of a desalination plant or reservoir to be served from a single system. This capability reduces complexity and cuts capital costs, providing a flexible, industry-standard deployment framework that minimises custom engineering costs and implementation delays.
Energy Efficient
In line with a broader strategy to sustainably meet Dubai’s growing water demands, the Hassyan plant also features an outstanding energy efficiency profile. SIDEM has leveraged its extensive expertise in large-scale desalination to enhance the energy efficiency of RO technology, achieving a low energy consumption rate of 2.9 kilowatt-hours per cubic meter and reducing the energy demands of such operations by 35% over the last decade.
Environmental Impact and Regulations
The plant’s location near the Jebel Ali Wetland Sanctuary, a Ramsar-protected site, has necessitated strict adherence to environmental regulations. Veolia has taken extensive measures to minimise the impact on local wildlife, including scheduling construction activities around the breeding season of endangered turtles and carefully selecting discharge areas to protect the ecosystem. This commitment to environmental laws ensures that the plant operates without disrupting the natural habitats within this ecologically significant area.
